Grade Reference Chart
There are two modes. Use Single Semester GPA when you want to check one term only. Use Cumulative CGPA to enter all subjects from your entire program and see your overall grade point average. You do not need to press any button — results update as you type.
Select 4.0 or 5.0 based on your institution. The 4.0 scale is standard in North America, South Asia, and most international universities. The 5.0 scale is used by some institutions, particularly in certain countries and private colleges. Check your transcript or student handbook if you are unsure.
Click the Add Subject button and type the subject name. The name is optional — you can leave it blank if you just want a quick total. Add as many subjects as you need. Three rows appear by default to get you started. Delete any row using the red × button on the right.
Use the Letter toggle to pick a grade from A+ to F from a dropdown. Switch to Points if your transcript shows a numeric value like 3.7 directly. Then type the credit hours for each subject. Theory courses are usually 3 credit hours; lab courses are often 1. Your transcript or course catalog lists the exact value for each class.

Credit hours (also called credit units or credit points in some countries) represent the weekly contact time a course carries. A standard lecture-based course is usually worth 3 credit hours. A lab or practical session is typically 1 to 2 credit hours. Final year projects or dissertations can range from 4 to 6 credit hours. The credit hour value for each course is printed on your transcript and course registration form.
The CGPA formula is the same at virtually every university in the world. Understanding it helps you figure out exactly what grade you need in each subject to reach your target.
The Formula
CGPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Quality Points for each subject = Grade Points × Credit Hours
You calculate quality points separately for every subject, add them all up, then divide by the total number of credit hours. This weighted average ensures that a 4-credit course counts more heavily toward your CGPA than a 1-credit course.
Worked example on 4.0 scale
Why weighted average matters
Suppose you score A in a 1-credit lab and C in a 4-credit core subject. Averaging the letter grades might look like a B, but the weighted CGPA reflects the C much more strongly because that course carries four times the weight. This is exactly why a single difficult high-credit course can noticeably move your overall CGPA up or down.
Understanding this also reveals the most efficient way to improve: focusing on high-credit subjects where even one grade bump has the biggest impact on your final CGPA.
4.0 Scale — grade point values
CGPA ranges and what they mean
Most universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain enrolled. For merit scholarships and graduate school the typical minimum is 3.0 to 3.5. These thresholds vary by institution, so always check your student handbook.
Knowing the formula is one thing. Knowing when to use each calculator mode is what actually saves you time. Here are the most common situations students run into.
You just received your results for five subjects. Open Single Semester mode, add each course with its grade and credit hours, and your semester GPA appears instantly. You can screenshot the result card and keep it alongside your official result slip for your records.

Most graduate programs in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia publish minimum GPA requirements. Research-intensive programs and top-ranked schools typically want 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. Professional programs like MBA, law, and medicine are similarly competitive. Programs in continental Europe often use percentage-based grades rather than GPA, so you may need to provide a converted figure.
Strong letters of recommendation, research experience, and a well-written statement of purpose can partially offset a CGPA that falls below the stated minimum, but a CGPA at or above the threshold is always the safer position.
Employment screening
Industries that commonly filter applications by GPA include investment banking, management consulting, large accounting firms, and certain government agencies. Firms in these sectors often screen at 3.5 or sometimes 3.7. Technology companies, creative agencies, and start-ups are generally less focused on GPA and more interested in portfolio work, side projects, and practical skills.
If your CGPA is below a company's stated threshold, consider whether you have a compelling upward trend — for instance, a first-year CGPA of 2.6 that improved to 3.4 by graduation tells a story that a flat number does not.
Dean's List and Honours
Most universities award Dean's List recognition to students who achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher while carrying a full course load. Graduating with honours (cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude in the US system) typically requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5, 3.7, and 3.9 respectively, though exact cutoffs vary by institution.
Academic probation and progression
Falling below a CGPA of 2.0 places most students on academic probation, which can restrict course registration and eligibility for campus housing, financial aid, and student visas. Some programs have higher minimum requirements engineering and medical programs often require at least a 2.5 to continue. Check your institution's academic regulations directly rather than relying on general benchmarks.
Scholarships and financial aid
Need-based scholarships rarely have CGPA requirements but merit-based awards almost always do. GPA stands for Grade Point Average and refers to your academic performance in one semester. CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average it covers every semester you have completed in your program. If you enter only this semester's subjects into this calculator, you get your semester GPA. If you enter all subjects from your entire degree program, you get your CGPA. Official documents like scholarship applications and job forms almost always ask for CGPA, not a single semester's GPA.
For each subject, multiply the grade points by the credit hours to get quality points. For example, a B+ (3.3 points) in a 3-credit course gives 9.9 quality points. Add up all quality points across every subject you have taken. Then add up all credit hours. Divide total quality points by total credit hours. The result is your CGPA. This calculator does all of that automatically the moment you enter a credit hour value — you just add your subjects and read the number.
The answer depends on your field and destination. For competitive industries like finance and consulting, many firms screen applicants at 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. For most graduate programs in North America and the UK, a 3.0 is the typical minimum and 3.5 makes you a strong candidate. For technical fields, internship experience and project quality often matter as much as your CGPA. A CGPA above 3.5 is considered excellent at virtually any institution.
On a 4.0 scale, the maximum possible grade (A or A+) is worth 4.0 grade points. This is the standard used in the United States, Canada, South Asia, and many other regions. On a 5.0 scale, the top grade is worth 5.0 points. Some institutions prefer this to allow finer distinction at the top of the range. The letter grades are identical on both scales, but the numeric value attached to each grade shifts. Switch to Cumulative CGPA mode using the tabs near the top of the calculator, then add every subject from every semester you have completed. Enter the grade and credit hours for each one. The calculator sums all quality points and divides by total credit hours to give your cumulative figure. You do not need to calculate each semester separately and then average the results that approach is actually less accurate because it does not account for semesters with different total credit loads.
An F grade contributes 0 quality points. Those credit hours are still added to your total credit hours, so the zero quality points pull your CGPA down. If you retake the subject and pass, most universities replace the original F with the new grade in the CGPA calculation, though some include both attempts. Enter the F into this calculator to see the exact damage, then temporarily change it to the grade you expect on a retake to see how much improvement a retake would bring.

There is no single universal conversion method. Different countries, universities, and even faculties within the same university use different formulas. A common approximation used in South Asia multiplies CGPA by 9.5. In some European systems, percentage grades map directly to letter grades without a formula. In the US, GPA is rarely converted to a percentage at all. For any official application, use your institution's published conversion table rather than a general formula, as admissions committees know the difference.
Small differences are normal and usually come down to institution-specific rounding rules, slightly different grade point values for plus and minus grades, or policies around repeated courses. Some universities exclude the first attempt at a repeated course from the CGPA calculation while others include both. This calculator uses standard weighted averaging and common grade mappings, which closely matches most institutions but may not account for every local rule. A strong CGPA opens doors, especially at the screening stage of applications. But it is one factor among many. Internships, research publications, extracurricular achievements, technical skills, and the ability to communicate well all matter and in some fields they matter more than GPA. A student with a 3.2 and two relevant internships will often fare better than one with a 3.8 and no practical experience. The most useful approach is to keep your CGPA above the relevant threshold for your goals and invest the rest of your energy in building real-world credibility.
