Subtract the sale price from the original price to find the amount that was removed. Then divide that amount by the original price and multiply by 100. If a product was 2000 and now costs 1600 the difference is 400. Divide 400 by 2000 and you get 0.2. Multiply by 100 and the discount is 20 percent. Sale Price equals the Original Price multiplied by the quantity one minus the discount percentage divided by one hundred. Written more simply that is Original Price times the fraction you keep after the discount. A 5000 rupee item at 30 percent off means you keep 70 percent. So 5000 times 0.70 equals 3500 rupees. The saving is 1500 rupees.

No and this is one of the most common mistakes people make. When a store gives a 20 percent sale and then an additional 10 percent coupon the total saving is not 30 percent. It is 28 percent. This is because the second discount applies to the already reduced price not the original. On a 5000 rupee item 20 percent off gives 4000. Then 10 percent off 4000 gives 3600. You saved 1400 out of 5000 which is 28 percent not 30. Always use the Find Sale Price tab twice for stacked discounts.

Divide the sale price by the decimal that remains after the discount. If something costs 1400 rupees after a 30 percent discount you divide 1400 by 0.70 which gives you 2000 rupees as the original price. Not always. A 50 percent discount on something that was artificially marked up can still leave you paying more than its actual value. Some retailers raise prices before a sale season so the marked discount looks more impressive than it really is. The best habit is to note the price of something over a few weeks before buying during a sale. This way you know whether the original price on the tag was real or inflated.

In most cases sales tax or GST is calculated on the final discounted price. So if you get 20 percent off a 3000 rupee item your taxable amount is 2400 rupees not 3000. However some businesses and some promotional terms calculate tax on the original price or apply tax before the coupon is deducted.
